Frequently Asked Questions.

What size/strength AmSteel do I need for my application?
Though the strength of rope depends on your personal project, always select the strongest of any given size. (For example, a load of 200 lbs represents 2% of the strength of a 10,000 lb breaking weight rope. The same 200 lb load represents 4% of the strength of a 5,000 lb breaking weight rope)

Do you suggest using a shorter piece of rope in the winter for snow plowing?
Since the cable will be cycled in and out repeatedly and will experience sharp angles, we suggest temporarily replacing the winch line with a shorter line to be used for the snow plow season.

How can I avoid twisting my braided rope?
To prevent twisting, make the direction of turns over the winch in alternate directions.

How do I keep my rope in good condition when I use it in abrasive conditions?

To prevent abrasion, we suggest you invest in a chafe guard to protect the rope. Damage to a braided rope can occur from a number of things, including rocks and limbs.

What kind of protection should I use for the rope on my winch, a fair lead or roller?
At Custom Splice, we suggest using a roller fair head that is in good, nick free condition with smooth rollers.

What makes AmSteel so much better than steel rope?

AmSteel has many advantages over steel. We have listed these advantages in the Information portion of this website.

When should I cease to use my rope?
Ropes should be visually inspected before use, and not used if the rope shows physical signs of aging or weakness. First, if fibers appear weak, have the rope re-spliced/ or downgraded. Additionally, if the rope is frayed or discolored (due to chemical exposure) do not use. Keep in mind a rope used often will become compact and rigid, thus reducing rope strength.

Where should I store my rope?
The ideal storage for braided rope is away from chemicals, away from the sun and off the floor.
